high efficiency photovoltaics
When applied to high efficiency photovoltaic cells, nano-silicon can be optimized to reduce reflection across the solar spectrum and reduce this reflection for all angles of incidence light. In addition nano-silicon can dramatically increase the optical absorption of silicon. Both the reduction in reflection and the increase in absorption are accomplished with a single layer of nanoengineered material. Bandgap is able to finely tune this nanoengineered layer thus altering the solar cell’s optical and electrical properties to maximize efficiency for solar energy collection.
A new material with new properties demands a new device architecture. Bandgap’s device design features the p-n junction below the nanowire array, thus allowing the benefits of nanowires for solar cells, without a large junction area inherent in other nanowire solar designs.
